Budleigh Salterton is very short of places for public entertainment. There are numbers of small private or club halls but only the Public Hall, built as a cinema in 1928, is available for regular entertainment. It is well kept and inviting as a space and seats around 250 depending upon the type of event.

There are also the comfortable churches, such as the Parish Church of St. Peter's and the Temple Methodist Church that are made available for concerts. However, there is no place that can be used for band concerts or outdoor performance.

The Green seems an obvious choice for this; though jealously guarded by townspeople against any form of development it does seem the ideal place for a stylish and useful bandstand.

What about a modern bandstand?

or a traditional style:

or even one with a small paved area for tables or performance?

Let's have a dabate about this. Surely anything would be better than the useless and risible little shelter that now adorns the Green. Bandstands exist in every conceivable design from temporary and demountable to solidy built with cafe beneath the stand.
